open file in new tab BUT in background

You might like to try the focus option of :help nvim-tree-api.node.open.tab() which you can map as a simple :help nvim-tree-mappings

end
vim.keymap.set('n', '<C-y>', require("nvim-tree.api").node.open.tab, opts('focus: true'))

but it still opens in a new tab and change focus..

You should be passing focus to require("nvim-tree.api").node.open.tab, not opts().

excuse my ignorance but still no progress:

vim.keymap.set('n', '<C-y>', require("nvim-tree.api").node.open.tab, {focus = true})

Invalid key focus..

should do what you are after.

Thank you. It works. But what if I want to override the C-t shortcut?
It does not work if I just replace C-y with C-t ..

You can simply override it. :help nvim-tree-quickstart-custom-mappings actually has a <c-t> override example. Replace api.tree.change_root_to_parent with your function.

Please ensure you have the opts function defined in your on_attach method. Invoke help g? in nvim-tree to ensure you can see your binding with its description.
