The material breakthrough
Opencell (AeroCement) is related to aircrete but does not collapse.
Traditional aircrete fails when the foam reaches critical mass: the bubbles pop and the entire structure falls in on itself. A simple thixotropic surfactant gel changes that failure point.
Mix:
- Xanthan gum suspended in alcohol
- Dawn Ultra
- Water
This produces a gel. Ratio: 1 part gel : 2 parts cement.
As the mix is agitated, air is entrained. When it reaches the same critical point where ordinary aircrete collapses, the thixotropic gel locks the shape. The bubbles rupture, but the matrix remains. The result is a stable, breathable, fully interconnected open-cell concrete — every void is connected to every other void.
That single change turns a failed insulation foam into a high-surface-area heat exchanger that can be cast, pumped, or 3D-printed.
Why this matters — the triple-utility cascade

Heat
Paint the open-cell surface black or load it with activated charcoal. It becomes a volumetric blackbody that captures nearly all incident solar energy.
Form a phi-spiral air path through the material. Stack effect + turbulence create a vortex at the outlet. Run the hot air through a copper coil inside an insulated ferrocement tank and the heat is stored. -
Cold
The same open-cell matrix, kept wet and preceded by a desiccant, creates massive evaporative surface area (every pore, not just the tunnel walls). Hot dry air interacting with that surface drops to approximately 35–40 °F via the latent heat of vaporization, independent of ambient temperature as long as the air is dry enough. Store the cold side in a second insulated ferrocement tank. -
Work
The resulting ΔT drives a Stirling engine + flywheel for mechanical power and a TEG for electricity. Heat is used as heat, cold as cold, mechanical work as mechanical work. Electricity is reserved only for loads that truly require it.
The entire system is passive after construction. No grid, no pumps, no moving parts beyond the Stirling.
Carbon-negative variant
Replace the solar absorber with a rocket mass heater fired on coppiced Black Locust (100× easier to harvest than conventional firewood and regenerates). The same open-cell cascade now runs on a renewable, carbon-negative fuel source while still delivering heat, cold, and shaft work.
Structural and architectural uses
- Fill cardboard geodesic panels (acetone + silicone treated, flanged triangles) — 1v emergency shelter to 50v stadium scale.
- Core material inside double-catenary stressed-skin ferrocement shells (pure compression geometry).
- Stator-motor mixing produces finer, more uniform bubbles. Combined with alkali-resistant glass fiber (≥20 % zirconium) the mix can be lighter and stronger than conventional concrete, potentially pumpable over long distances with far less labor.
This is the same direction NASA and others are exploring with nano-aerogels, achieved with off-the-shelf materials and open knowledge.
Open source & ACRE
Everything is published under CC-BY-SA (docs) / GPL-3 (code). No patents. Defensive publication is intentional.
Work is measured in joules. Verified physical work mints ACRE claims. The same unit that quantifies energy captured also quantifies human contribution. As systems come online they effectively print their own coordination token — decentralized, open-source, and cooperative by design.
Current status
Theoretical physics validated. Mixes and cascade documented. First instrumented prototype waiting only on a build site in southeast Missouri.
Workshop offers: free or materials-at-cost for anyone in the region who wants a working system and is willing to measure and share results.
